What is the Reykjavík Academy?

The Reykjavík Academy (RA) is a non-profit institution for independent scholars in the humanities and social sciences. The Academy was founded in 1997 and moved to its present location at Hringbraut 121 in 1998. The Academy's members also include a number of foundations, associations and companies. The Reykjavík Academy organizes conferences, arranges lectures and provides a forum for its members to discuss their research. Art exhibitions in the Academy's Hoffmannsgallerí are also a vital part of its activities.

The Academy aims to be a link:

Between different areas of study at the university level
Between generations within the academic community
Between sexes in the academic community
between science and the arts
between society and the ivory tower

Relevance

The Reykjavík Academy is managed by its members, and the needs of scholars have first priority. It is a democratic working place, independent of orders from above. Freedom of thought and behavior are the Academy's key values. The Academy is a cross-disciplinary institution where rigorous scholarship and fertile discussion meet. The Reykjavík Academy is the second largest workplace for humanities and social sciences scholars in Iceland. Scholars come from fields such as anthropology and literature studies, ethnology and history, political science and theology, to mention a few.
