Erling útskrifaðist úr gullsmíði frá Iðnskólanum í Reykjavík árið 1983 og sem leikari frá Leiklistarskóla Íslands 1990 og hefur unnið jöfnum höndum við þessar greinar bæði hérlendis og erlendis. Hann stofnaði Hafnarfjarðarleikhúsið ásamt fleirum 1994 og sinnti jafnframt félagsstörfum innan Sjálfstæðu leikhúsanna, sat í stjórn Leikarafélagsins, Sviðslistasambandsins og Norræna leiklistarráðsins. Erling var kjörinn forseti BÍL árið 2018 og sinnir fjölda trúnaðarstarfa á vegum þess. Samhliða félagsstörfunum rekur Erling vinnustofu og myndlistarrými við gömlu höfnina í Reykjavík.

Erling Jóhannesson graduated as a goldsmith from Reykjavík Technical School in 1983 and from the Icelandic School of Speech and Drama in 1990 and has since then worked equally in both fields in Iceland and abroad. He co-founded the Hafnarfjörður Theater in 1994 and served for decades the boards of various NGO´s, such as the Indepentent Theaters, The Actor´s Association, the Performing Arts Association of Iceland and the Nordic Theater Council. Erling was elected president of BÍL (The Association of Icelandic Artists) in 2018 and he performs a number of confidential positions on its behalf. In addition to the artist social work, Erling runs a studio and art space in the old harbour of Reykjavík.
